Celebrating Maine’s Culinary Past, Present, and Future
Real Maine is proud to sponsor the Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook (compiled and edited by Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz, Islandport Press, 2020). The book includes 200 recipes to celebrate Maine’s 200 years of statehood. Photos, essays, and historical information are interspersed with the recipes. The cookbook contains interesting and diverse remembrances, historical essays, and photos to enrich the content. There are much more than just recipes in this book!
Lovers of traditional Maine ingredients will find exciting recipes to try, such as Maine Wild Blueberry Salsa, Thai Fiddlehead Stir Fry, and Worcester Family Blueberry Buckle. There are also many old favorites, like Baked Yellow-Eye Beans and Twice-Baked Potatoes. There are recipes for main dishes, sides, desserts, and drinks, all reflecting the cultural diversity of Maine. Noted chefs, celebrities, and “regular Mainers” contributed the recipes.
Dash of Maine Cooking Challenge
This summer, Maine Public is sponsoring a cooking contest focused on recipes from the Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook. The Dash of Maine Cooking Challenge will offer a new recipe from the book each week, through mid-Augusta. Home chefs can submit photos of the dish they prepare using the recipe. Maine Public will feature the submitted photos online, and each week they will select a lucky participant. The winner will receive a copy of the Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook to add a dash of Maine cooking to all their meals!
