25th Annual Farmers Market Week August 4-10

This year’s National Farmers Market Week gives Real Maine, along with the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets, a chance to acknowledge the important role these markets play in bringing local food and products to consumers.

National Farmers Market Week, now in its 25th year, is being observed from August 4-10. It is the perfect time to explore local markets, just as Maine enters peak growing season. Customer favorites like blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, sweet corn, and cucumbers are in abundance.

Maine has a network of 95 summer and 35 winter farmers’ markets across all 16 counties. These markets support more than 400 farms, food producers, and artisan businesses.

“Maine farmers’ markets serve so many roles in Maine communities. They attract tourists, incubate small businesses, sustain livelihoods, bring people together, create food access points, fight food insecurity, educate, inspire, and entertain,” said Jimmy DeBiasi, Executive Director of the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets. “We encourage everyone living and visiting Maine to visit a farmers’ market this season and get a real taste of Maine’s agriculture and food producers. Supporting local food systems has never been easier or more important.”

MFFM’s low-income food access program, Maine Harvest Bucks, provides matching incentive dollars to shoppers when they use SNAP/EBT at the farmers’ market. MFFM’s Bumper Crop program distributes gift certificates that can be used at participating markets throughout the state.

MFFM is planning a National Farmers’ Market Week celebration event at the Downtown Waterville Farmers’ Market on August 8 to engage with shoppers and give away raffle prizes. MFFM is also conducting a similar celebration event at the Portland Farmers’ Market at Deering Oaks Park on August 10.

Farmers’ markets in Maine each are independently organized and run, often by the farmers themselves. Check your local market’s website or Facebook page for information on what activities they may be planning for National Farmers’ Market Week. Go to MFFM’s website (mainefarmersmarkets.org)  to find markets by day of the week or by town.
